Self-service BI can either empower teams or create chaos. The key is giving users the flexibility to create reports and apply filters while keeping data secure and definitions consistent.
Guardrails start with governance: who can see which data, which metrics are certified, and how calculations are defined. When everyone uses the same definitions (e.g. "revenue" or "active customer"), reports stay comparable and decisions stay aligned.
Next, provide safe defaults. Let users filter by region, time period, or product—within the bounds of their access. Allow custom views and saved reports without letting them alter source data or break multi-tenant security.
Finally, make it easy. Low-code or no-code builders, natural-language questions, and templates for common reports reduce the need for gatekeepers while keeping control where it belongs. Self-service done right means more insight, less backlog, and one version of the truth.
